Is your anxiety holding you back? Anxiety is a feeling of worry or nervousness, and although you may feel it...

You are not alone

Anxiety is increasingly common in in our lives today, and many people are dealing with anxiety at different points in their lives.

Anxiety is a natural process that has evolved with us, and is part of our natural instinct to protect ourselves. This survival response is fight or flight mode, and is how we respond when we encounter danger. However, our body and the adrenaline produced cannot tell the difference between real danger or danger just in our head. This perceived danger is in fact not a threat to our survival, this is unneccessary anxiety.

There is more than one type of anxiety.

Social Anxiety Disorder

This is when you feel self-conscious about social situations

General Anxiety Disorder

Sufferers experience an overwhelming fear and tension without any reason

Panic Disorder / Panic Attacks

These can be regular, recurring attacks where symptoms include chest pain and palpitations

OCD is also a form of anxiety.

Anxiety Symptoms:

Common symptoms experienced can be both physical and emotional. Physical symptoms can include Stomach ache, feeling sick, shakiness, excessive sweating, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, dry mouth, difficulty falling or staying asleep, muscle aches and tension, lack of concentration, fatigue.

The emotional symptoms of anxiety include negative though, expecting the worst to happen, excessive fear and worry, feeling 'on edge', feeling apprehensive or hypervigilant. You might find that because of this your behaviours change too, such as avoiding going out to places or certain people, or only going out with another person. If you do go out you might find you have an 'escape plan' so you can leave, perhaps you smoke or drink more, avoid eye contact or having something to fiddle with such as clothing or a bag.

These behaviours are ways of coping with anxiety, and whilst they may make you feel better in the moment, they are dealing with the anxiety.
